Here you can still see some of the verdaccio (green) layer, that was applied on top of the charcoal and ink layer.

I then do the final, color layer right over the verdaccio, alowing some grey-green to show through.  See how life like the baby Jesus is becoming.

Sometimes the old masters indicated that their subject was deceased was by leaving them painted in verdaccio (no flesh color added)
